Glam rock bands, sex, drugs and rock, and roll were doing well in Los Angeles, California in the 1980s. You could hit the nightclubs at this time like The Troubadour and The Whisky a Go Go and listen to bands such as Hanoi Rock and Motley Crue. There came the popularity of “grunge” bands like Nirvana. It was at this time that Guns N’ Roses made their breakthrough with their first single “Sweet Child O’ Mine” on July 23, 1988.
Guns N’ Roses came from the combination of two other groups – L.A. Guns and Hollywood Rose. They began playing in the style of hard rock and gradually went on to heavy metal. Their first album was titled Appetite for Destruction and their debut single was “Welcome to the Jungle”.
However, it was their second single “Sweet Child O’ Mine” that made them popular and made a place for them in music history.
This song not only became a #1 hit in 1988 but also was a true rock classic. It made rock stars out of Guns N’ Roses.
