Rock and Roll Tops 1964

The year begins with great rock and roll when at the end of January The Beatles hit “I Want to Hold Your Hand” rises to the top of the U.S. Pop charts

The Ed Sullivan Show ratings go sky high when The Beatles make their appearance for the first time in February

The Beatles go on to make rock and roll history when they have six number 1 hits between February and June. This record was only surpassed by Elvis in 1956

Time for the British Invasion. The airwaves start flooding in the Mersey beat sound and British bands start coming to America,

In July American bands regain the Pop charts with hits by the Beach Boys and the Four Seasons. On the charts is “Rag Doll” by The Four Seasons.

A Hard Day’s Night” the first film made by The Beatles opens to great reviews.

Along come more groups which are part of the British Invasion and bring a mix of the blues and R&B. These bands include The Rolling Stones, Kinks and The Animals. With songs like the ever-popular “House of the Rising Sun” by The Animals.

Motown has a string of hits by The Temptations, Four Tops, and The Supremes. The Supremes manage to record three number 1 hits toward the end of the year. “Baby Love” by The Supremes.

Two women rock the charts – Dionne Warwick with “Don’t Make Me Over” and Lesley Gore with “You Don’t Own Me”.

Tragedy hits soul music as its biggest star Sam Cooke gets shot by a woman while staying at a motel in December. He was 33 years old. “Another Saturday Night” by Sam Cooke.
