Rock and Roll March 4

1959 – Volare” by Domenico Modugno won Record of the Year at the very first Grammy Awards. “Peter Gunn” by Henry Mancini Album of the Year and “Tequila” by The Champs for best R&B performance. As you can see rock and roll didn’t get a single nomination.

1967 – Englebert Humperdinck got on the U.K. record chart with “Release Me” and stayed there for six weeks. This song sold well over a million copies in the U.K. and rose to number one in eight other countries.

This same year one of my favorite “Ruby Tuesday” by The Rolling Stones rose to the top of the Billboard singles chart.

1972 – Badfinger was awarded a Gold record for “Day After Day”.

1989 “Like a Prayer” by Madonna made its debut on a Pepsi commercial.
