Rock and Roll August 1

1956 – Two hit singles by Elvis “Blue Suede Shoes” and “Love Me Tender”.

1959 – Johnny Horton’s “The Battle of New Orleans” gets shoved out of the number one spot and gets replaced by “Lonely Boy” by Paul Anka.

1960 – Chubby Checker releases “The Twist” which rises to number one and starts a real dance craze.

1964 – The Beatles score big with their song “A Hard Day’s Night”.

The same year Jan and Dean come out with “Little Old Lady from Pasadena”.

1966 – The Troggs wound up with two songs on the charts. “With a Girl Like You”, becoming a major hit in the U.K. and my all-time favorite “Wild Thing” on the Billboard chart in the U.S.

1970 – Chicago gets on the hits chart with “25 or 6 to 4

1987 – Bob Seger hits number one with his song “Shakedown.” This song was in the movie “Beverly Hills Cop Ii.”

And these are just some of the highlights that occurred this first day of August through the years.
