Rock and Roll August 13

1952 – The original version of “Hound Dog” was a big hit for songwriters Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller. It was recorded by Willie Mae (Big Mama) Thornton and stayed on the Billboard R&B charts for 7 weeks. The song went on to sell almost two million copies. Most of you probably have only heard Elvis’ version so I added this one.

1965 – Two weeks after opening in London The Beatles second movie “Help!” opens in New York.

1966 – The Lovin’ Spoonful had a big hit with “Summer In the City”.

1969 – “American Woman” became a Top Ten hit in the U.S., Canada, Switzerland, and the Netherlands. It was recorded by The Guess Who. That same week the band received their first American Gold record for “These Eyes”.

1983 – KC and the Sunshine Band rose up to number one on the U.K. singles chart with “Give It Up”
