Karate Kid returns on You Tube Red

When I read this story on the MSN Entertainment pages this afternoon, I was complete shock and awe that the “Karate Kid” movies that starred Ralph Macchio as Daniel LaRusso or in the words of his late mentor Mister  Kensuki Miyagi (the late “Pat” Morita)  would call his student “Daniel San”.

The amazing part of this story is that it reminds me of the relationship between former boxer Robert “Rocky” Balboa (Sylvester Stallone) and  the late Apollo Creed (Carl Weathers) who died from injuries at the hands of former Soviet Union boxer Ivan Drago (Dolph Lundgren) in Las Vegas in the movie “Rocky IV” which came out in 1985.

The updated Karate Kid which is not to confused with the D C Comics book character of the same of the rebooted movie that starred Jaden Smith, Jackie Chan and Tajari P. Henson which came out in 2010 takes place 30 years later after the first “Karate Kid” came out with LaRusso defeating his bitter rival Johnny Lawrence (William Zabka) in the finals of a karate tournament.

I  saw the Lawrence character as a bully toward LaRusso since Lawrence either grew up in an abusive home or he had the attitude that many people have when they reach the pinnacle of success which Is he thought like the Marvel super hero character Squirrel Girl who is unbeatable in battle according to the writers of the character from Marvel comics.

The story goes on that LaRusso Is struggling to live his life without the services of his mentor Mister Mayagi since the actor  Noriyuki “Pat” Morita passed away in 1995. In the other side of the coin Lawrence is struggling to live a happy life by reopening the dojo where he started his karate career the “Cobra Kai” dojo.

The theme of this television series that will be You Tube Red in 2018 is that both Lawrence and LaRusso use karate as a way to fulfill their desire to keep on living since no matter who we are, we need something to challenge us to keep on going until we draw our last breath in this lifetime.

For obvious reasons, I could not see any movie studio in America wanting to make Karate Kid movie with an older Ralph Macchio take on William Zabka in another karate battle. But going to You Tube Red should boost the viewership from the diehard fans of the movie series.
