How does the cooking on the Antarctic look like

The Antarctic is one of the most isolated places on Earth. It looks like a non – Earth. With its extreme weather conditions, it offers a calmness and lack of crowd unlike any other place.

Cyprien Verseux works in the farthest scientific base in the world, located on the Antarctic. This uninhabited place, far away from the civilization, is also one of the most isolated places one can think of on Earth.

While doing researches and experiments, Cyprien updates on his personal blog how does the life on the Antarctic look like. In this environment even some of the basic things one should do seem very difficult.

During 9 months of the year they see no light, no sunrise. because of the weather conditions there do not come nor go vehicles with people willing to visit them. At the moment there are only 13 people living on that place.

Among the difficulties they face on a daily basis, the main one is the lack of oxygen. The average daily temperature tends to be -50 degrees Celsius. During the night it even goes to -80 degrees Celsius. As they go nine months without differentiating day by night, except of the temperature difference, their biorhythm is completely changed. The air is fresher and cooler than any other place on Earth, therefore it has no smell. They face smell shock whenever they come back to the "normal conditioned place on Earth".

The closest supermarket is 4.000 km away from the place. In a case of a need of some product, the chances are they are to wait 12 to 14 days until they get it. During the winter there live only 15 people and the chef has to be able to be a firefighter at the same time. The place is known as "White Mars" as well due to its harsh living conditions.

Concordia is located on a height of 3.300 m above the sea level. There could be hosted as much as 60 people at a time. There is a cinema, a hospital, several laboratories, private rooms, common area and a big kitchen. However the life at this place is far away from normal.

  1. I’ll pass on making this place a travel destination. But it does help my mentality going into the winter seeing this because our temperatures are nowhere near what these temperatures are.

  2. The pictures are fantastic and also frozen, just like the food. As much as I like winter, Antarctica is a little bit too cold for me especially since it has no trees at all. But because of its cold, it also seems very peaceful. Having worked for 13 years 12 hours night in the ICU, nighttime is OK for me but nine months out of twelve, I do not think I could acclimate myself for that long. All in all, though, Antarctica still remains and has its own kind of beauty and stillness that I would enjoy for a while.

    • That´s a great challenge! Not everyone would accept it! However, it calls my attention, but I think only people who do researches and work in laboratories are able to work and live there for some time

  3. Yes, its a very interesting article, some of our New Zealand people work at Antartica. They have a special plane that takes off from Christchurch.
I know for a fact that there are some very expensive cruises that take people to explore parts of Antartica from Argentina.
