In Kenneth Shumaker’s Eren’s Challenge, we enter the world of the robotics research technician, a mature humal male, Eren Mallet. During Eren’s 5th Galaxy Palcard sector journey, he encounters hazards with his friend, Esmelda(Es) Lantora, the mature humal female who is an ambassador’s administrator. The pair struggle with adventures and dramatic developments while in the metropolitan industrial trade city of Goral, on the planet of the Krenar. Here, they fight with bureaucrats and the Hean priestly hierarchy.

The umber beast sits alone with me at the table, in essence, her lunch which she brought with her reminds me of cattle tripe. The substance of raw animal guts, is for the umber gnoll’s eating.

I look up into her eyes, asking in my rough New Goran dialect, “You really eat that?”

Looking back down at me, she frowns gnoll style, lowering her lips over her teeth which even cover her canine teeth.

She asks in a refined, educated New Goran, “This bothers you? You, humans, are so squeamish. Even our young relish such fare as this. Is this why the others left the staff room during our lunch hour?”

Laughing, I nod once, and then after slowly calming I respond, “My friend, this indeed is why the others left … perhaps we’ll arrange for your eating time to be different from our other’s lunch hour, but we’ll keep you socializing with us at our lunch … do our eating habits bother you?”

Wiping ooze from her muzzle after chewing through a piece of cow’s stomach. She shakes her head spraying blood and fluid droplets, and then replies after swallowing, “No … I’m fine while you eat … perhaps if I eat after your people finish their lunch hour?”

Offering me her paw, she grins and encompasses in a shake, my otherwise large hand which is now so tiny in her paw – much like an infant’s hand in an adult male’s.

I burst out in a belly laugh, but instead of becoming offended, Ula clicks her teeth in response, and then says, “Lieutenant Unhrah said you were weak that way. Making your laughing actions, at odd times … I may become used to it.”

Casually slinking in, Jill enters the staff room and sits next to me. Facing Ula, she says, “I apologize for leaving … I had to regather my stomach. I never properly introduced myself this morning. I’m assistant project manager and robotics computer engineer, Jill Poulette. I run things around here when Eren’s away. Welcome to Trontal’s Archy robotics project. Welcome … Engineer Ula.”

I watch with patience as Ula corrects Jill with a kind of begrudging response, “Engineer Jill, I am actually Doctorate Ula. With my first doctorate in muon-fusion technology. I also have doctorates in chemistry, as well as kinetics, and masters degrees in kinematics and kinesics technologies … though I am on loan here to assist you and Master Eren in the Archy Project … on behalf of my leader, Angel.”

This ends the episode of Eren’s Challenge 013, ‘Umber essence Tripe.’ written by, Kenneth Shumaker.

To be continued in the next Eren’s Challenge episode 014, ‘Asia Minor Query’ on …

Having dealt with Jill and the umber beast, Ula, Eren now has to tend to a query of utmost urgency.
