The song “Elenore” by The Turtles came out in 1968 and was on the album The Turtles Present the Battle of the Bands. It was written by Howard Kaylan but was co-credited to all five members of their band. This song was meant to be a satire of their biggest pop hit “Happy Together”.
Since White Whale Records were pressuring the band to come up with another great hit this song was written in protest. They figured that it would be thought so bad that they would leave The Turtles alone. As a result and great surprise the song actually worked and became a song many really enjoyed. “Elenore” made the charts in the U.S., the U.K., Canada, Australia, and New Zealand where it hit number one.
I have included both songs here so you can listen to them. Personally. I really enjoy this song. Another reason for liking “Elenore” is it brings back memories of my late husband. At the end of the 1990s, we traveled to the U.S. because he had never been being born and raised in Riga, Latvia. While we were traveling in a rented car on the roads here and there the first song that came on the radio was this one.
