In 1911 the best song was “Down by the Old Mill Stream” sung by Harry MacDonough. It was a vaudeville hit that was written by Tell Taylor. It is a lovely sentimental and romantic song, reminding one of the old days gone by. I’ve given you a version of the song by Bing Crosby.
The publisher of the song sold four million copies. The song was written in 1908 as Taylor sat on the banks for the Blanchard River in northwest Ohio. The song became very popular after it was performed at a Woolworth store in Kansas City. It also became a standard with barbershop quartets.
