Deep Purple

This band comes from the U.K. Deep Purple are an English rock band which came together in Hertford in 1968. Considered to be the pioneers of heavy metal and modern hard rock they had a great influence on the kind of music people listened to. The Guinness Book of World Records listed them as “the globe’s loudest band” in 1975. Deep Purple has sold more than 100 million albums all around the globe.

This band has had many changes in its line-up but among the most successful were Ian Gillan vocals, Jon Lord organ, Roger Glover bass, Ian Paice drums, and Ritchie Blackmore guitar. Today Ian Paice is the only original Deep Purple band member who still remains with them. They received the Innovator Award at the Classic Rock Awards in London in 2011 and were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in October of 2012.

Their first two successful albums were Shades of Deep Purple and The Book of Taliesyn. Deep Purple began to gain recognition with the Concerto for Group and Orchestra in September of 1969. This was a three-movement epic and they performed it at the Royal Albert Hall in London along with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. The resulting live album got on the U.K. charts. Finally, they had a single which got on the U.K. Top Ten “Black Night”. Another album produced another hit “Strange Kind of Woman”.

The band went to Switzerland in 1971 to record Machine Head which gave them the popular song “Smoke on the Water”. The album itself reached number one on the U.K. charts and number 7 in the U.S. Other great songs included “Highway Star”, “Space Truckin’”, and “Lazy”. Deep Purple continued to tour and took on four North American tours in 1972. A Japan tour got them a double live album Made in Japan.

They became the top-selling artists in the U.S. in 1973. In 1974 they performed at Madison Square Garden in New York and at Nassau Coliseum on Long Island, New York. Then in March of 1976, they were touring England and performing at the Liverpool Empire Theater Coverdale a band member handed in his resignation. They were considering disbanding. After they finally broke up band members went on to play in other bands.

Deep Purple came together for a reunion in April of 1984 with Gillian, Lord, Blackmore, Glover, and Paice in the line-up. They recorded the album Perfect Strangers and it was released in October of 1984. Among the singles from the album were “Perfect Strangers” and “Knockin’ at Your Back Door”.

They went on tour to Australia, North America, and Europe. Returning to the U.K. they performed at Knebworth in 1985. Next came another album The House of Blue Light in 1987 and a world tour and a live album Nobody’s Perfect in 1988.

Their latest album came out in 2017 Infinite and included the singles “Time for Bedlam”, “All I Got Is You”, and “Johnny’s Band”.

Many other albums and performances have followed and Deep Purple remains active much to the delight of their many fans.
