This was such a shocker so long ago now, back in 1992 and most likely many have forgotten all about it but nevertheless, it did happen and it was a crime of passion and also a tragedy for all of those who were involved. The story involved a 17-year-old girl Amy Fisher who had an affair with a 38-year-old man Joey Buttafuoco in Long Island, New York. It ended when the girl shot the man’s wife Mary Jo Buttafuoco on the front porch of their home in Massapequa, New York. Amy Fisher became known as the “Long Island Lolita”. This story was so shocking that it filled the tabloids and newspapers, was the topic of many a talk show; it became the source of three made for TV movies and many, many different jokes.
Mary Jo Buttafuoco the victim of her husband’s foolishness wound up surviving the shooting but got a bullet lodged in her head and a partially paralyzed face. The teen girl Fisher pled guilty to the shooting, got convicted of assault and was sentenced to 5 to 15 years in prison. Joey Buttafuoco was convicted of statutory rape and sentenced to six-month in prison. His wife chose to stand by her husband wishing to believe that Fisher had turned his head.
Now if you think that this story is bad enough already there is more. While in prison Amy Fisher filed a $220 million lawsuit saying that prison guards had raped her but the judge didn’t buy it. Who would? Fisher also had an affair with her defense attorney. Anyway, we go on through this tangled web of unbelievable things and happenings. Fisher took anger-management courses in prison and wrote an apology to Mary Jo Buttafuoco. Apology? For nearly killing her and leaving her with a paralyzed face? As amazing as it might seem Mary Jo forgave her and showed up at Fisher’s parole hearing. She was released on parole in 1999 having served almost seven years. Mary Jo and Joey Buttafuoco moved to California. Wait that is not quite the ending in California Joey Buttafuoco having become somewhat like a celebrity tried to get into the movies and also become a talk-show host.
Today Mary Jo is now remarried and an American author and motivational speaker. Joey has had more run-ins with the law. Amy Fisher is married and has two children.
