By The Way – 10

When I met my friends later that evening, after this and that, I mentioned ‘Big Star’ coming into my restaurant.  They asked if he was as obnoxious as usual and I nodded.

Some knew more  about his career (or the lack thereof) and mentioned how now he was acting in little plays in little cities.

When they paused I admited; “I gave him a 10% discount.'”

Everyone cracked up, some almost choking on their drinks. Then we moved on to other topics.

The next day, thinking about “Big Star”, I realised, not for the first time, that he was his worst enemy.

He had destroyed his own career and still didn’t appreciate that if you treat people like dirt they return the favour.

Since he thought I was such a loser, I only gave him a small discount instead of the meal on the house.

As he thought I was probably a dishwasher, well, that’s the most a dishwasher could extend.
