The generation born after World War II been highly educated, taught responsibility. They were required to be strong and active, as society depended on them.
They were not pampered. They lived in the real world.
These were ‘free range’ children who played outside, unsupervised, unafraid.
They fought, they fell. They would, if caught breaching a rule, suffer manual discipline from their parents.
They were expected to think for themselves, not to be blown about by the wind. They were expected to exercise judgement.
At the age of 12 they were assumed to be capable of looking after themselves. Able to get to and from school, to be sent to the shop.
Childhood, that complete control by parents of their offspring, often waned by the age of ten and continued.
