UE part #2

Things went so well that in 1957 the six countries decided to set up an organization, the European Economic Community (ECC), to develop common laws and policies to improve trade and support farmers. This mode of cooperation subsequently extended to other areas where members of the organization felt that better results could be achieved by acting together. These organizations have merged and now bear the name of the European Union!

The results of the Union’s members were so impressive that more and more European countries wanted to join them. Denmark, Ireland and the United Kingdom decided to join in 1973. Greece became a member in 1981, followed by Spain and Portugal in 1986. Austria, Finland and Sweden acceded in 1995 and in 2004, ten other countries joined the Union Simultaneously, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Cyprus, Latvia, Lithuania, Hungary, Malta, Poland, Slovenia and Slovakia. In 2007, Romania and Bulgaria were also received in the European Union. Croatia joined in 2013!
