This lady beautified lunches for generations of Yugoslavs

The name of Zlata Bartl does not mean much to many, but she will probably recognize her nickname – she is “Aunt Vegeta”, a woman who invented the favorite spice of many generations. Zlata Bartl was a  scientist. She graduated in chemistry, physics, mathematics and mineralogy in Zagreb.

In 1955, during the official visit to Zagreb, the high snow blocked the roads for months, and Zlata could not return to her native Sarajevo.While spending time in Zagreb, she tried to find a job and applied for a chemical technician at the Podravka company … She soon got a positive answer. In 1956 he went to Koprivnica where he began his research work.On her initiative in 1957, the production of dehydrated soups, or, much better known “soup in the bag” began.Nevertheless, her greatest discovery came two years later – in 1959, a universal spice for food was created – “Vegeta”.It was about one of the first products exported to the world market. Thus, in 1967, Vegeta first arrived in Hungary and Russia, and in time it could be found on raffs stores in over 40 countries of the world.. Austria, Sweden, Germany, Czechoslovakia and Australia. Since 1989, Vegeta has been exported to America and Australia. The name “vegeta” was derived from the abbreviated name of the English word vegetables.

To the original recipe Vegeta Klasik enters the kitchen salt, dried vegetables 15.5% (carrots, parsnip, potatoes, onions, celery, parsley leaves), flavor enhancers, sugar, spices, corn starch and colors. Today, besides Vegeta Klasik, in the assortment of ,,Podravka,, products on the Serbian market, you can also find Vegeta with chicken, Vegeta liquid marinade and Vegeta cube.

Zlata Bartl received many awards for her discoveries. Until retirement she remained to work in “Podravka”. She died on July 30, 2008 in Koprivnica in the age of 88.
