Stećci Medieval Tombstone Graveyards

Stećak is a tombstone of great magnitude, weighing a few tons. In my environment there are 70 000 such stone boulders! Everyone lives in the Middle Ages from the 11th to the 16th centuries CE. So every stone is over 500 to 900 years old and each has its own story carved on itself. Only three years ago, UNESCO listed the Cultural Heritage List of these monumental tombstones.

The stećci have been deeply embedded in historical and continual cultural traditions and beliefs and toponyms demonstrate the historical meanings and significance of the stećci. Mysterious art expressions are engraved in stone. For example, when a person goes fishing or drowns in a river, if it’s a popular person, it would be written on a stećak. The stećci are associated with local folk and fairy tales, superstitions and customs; and their epigraphy and reliefs have significantly influenced the contemporary literature and other forms of art in all four countries, but also wider in the region.

Five hundred years ago, the local population built houses, schools, barns of these stone boulders and survived them again seventy thousand to this day. Can we imagine how much the middle ages really built them?

Here is all about 365 Photos Challenge and I am on Day 4.
