Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky

One of the most famous Russian composers of late Romanticism, Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky was born on 7 May 1840 in St. Petersburg. Tchaikovsky is from the age of five went to piano lessons and soon learned to play. Although it is very early on developed a passion for music, his parents had hoped to be employed in the civil service. When he was ten years old his parents sent him to boarding school in St. Petersburg. His mother died of cholera in 1854, when Peter was fourteen. Then he wrote a waltz in honor of his mother. “And he loved life like few others,” recalled his brother.

Tchaikovsky was hired in 1859 as a secretary in the Ministry of Justice. When he was twenty-one years he decided to attend music lessons in the Russian musical society. A few months later he enrolled at the newly founded St. Petersburg Conservatory. He was one of the first students of composition. While still studying, he gave private lessons to other students. In 1863 he moved to Moscow, where he became professor of harmony at the Moscow Conservatory. Works by Tchaikovsky were first performed in 1865.
