We know the term in relation to the girl who makes things difficult for that boy who likes her.
She acts as if she is not interested, doesn’t want to go out with him, etc.
If she is astute, she will be able to judge when being ‘hard to get’ will turn into ‘unwanted’, so having made her point, accepts that date.
Of course most people are not particularly astute and when they push others away, they stay away.
