Myths of American History – 1

It is called the ‘Land of Opportunity’ and ‘The Home of the Free.’ America is presented to the world as a place of equality and freedom.

History, written by Americans, seems to suggest Europeans arrived on virgin soil which begged for settlement. The land which we know today as the United States of America was not empty. There were hundreds of thousands of inhabitants, often called ‘Indians’ (as Columbus wanted to delude himself as if he had landed in ‘India’ ) who had lived there for thousands of years before the arrival of Europeans. After initial contact, treaties were created to maintain the peace. Borders were marked to separate the land between that given or sold to the settlers and the Native population.

If there was little immigration, if expansion was slow and measured, perhaps history would have been different. But that was not what happened.

America was not build on equality and freedom, it was built on war, slavery and exploitation.
