More Myths of American History – 2

“…From  the Halls of Montezuma To the Shores of Tripoli…”Is how the American Marine Corps Hymn begins. Does anyone wonder  what the words refer to?

Any text of American History goes from the War of Independence to the War of 1812 and then to the Civil War in 1861. The First  Tripolitan War began in 1801 until 1805.

The war began with the American refusal to continue payment of tribute to the piratical rulers of the North African  ‘Barbary States’ of Morocco, Algiers, Tunis,, and Tripoli; (what would become Libya).

This Tribute was necessary to buy immunity from attack on merchant vessels in the Mediterranean by the African Pirates, (Corsairs).

When people talk about Slavery it is always ‘European enslave African’ but what about the enslavement of Europeans by Africans?

The power of those Corsairs which controlled the Mediterranean and parts of the Atlantic who would capture a ship and the people on board and hold them for ransom.

If the ransom wasn’t paid, those people would be sold as slaves.
