Many people in India live below the poverty line. Illiteracy is one of the root cause of social issues here. The poor people don’t send their children to school because they can’t afford the education or simply because of the lack of awareness. Though Government is providing free education till primary level and many non-government organizations are also working in this direction but still poor people prefer that their children should work and provide money for the family rather than wasting their time in school. Child labour is another reason while illiteracy prevails due to the constant efforts by the government to eradicate illiteracy.
Art of Living Foundation is working whole-heartedly to provide free education to children in the rural and tribal areas. The foundation is running 421 free schools throughout the country and among them is the one in Dharavi – the biggest slum in Asia. Gurudev Sri Sri Ravishankar feels that it’s only through education that we can end the perpetual cycle of hunger and poverty in India and this is the reason, he has focused on establishing free schools throughout the country. This project is being run under the guidance of Gurudev’s sister Bhanu Didi.
