The Far Pavilions (A book review)

M.M. Kaye has written ‘The Far Pavilions’ which is a classic best seller of a few decades ago.  ‘The Far Pavilions’ is a story of two friends who have lost each other and find themselves again as adults in India. This is a story of history and culture. ‘The Far Pavilions’ is a book that teaches the reader about the Indian culture, and I do not mean Native American. A novel that is large, but is very descriptive about India and what makes ‘Indian’ culture tick. Reading this book will let the reader want to learn more about this land of reincarnation, the ‘caste’ system, and how cultures can work together, but actually ‘The Far Pavilions’ is about family and what constitutes this institution.

‘The Far Pavilions’ is a book that could teach the reader the language of India for there is a glossary of East Indian words with English translation at the end of the book.  A story of over 1000 pages the reader will still want to read to the end.  This is a story of love and war and how these two ideas affect lives.
