Dositej Obradović – educator and Serbian reformer was born around 1739 in Čakov, Romania, and died March 28th, 1908 in Belgrade. He devoted his life to traveling and learning, traveled over 40 years and became acquainted with new social, political and pedagogical ideas.Dositej Obradovic, with his persistent learning and work, has become an unwed boy with great ambitions, through a monk, to a well-educated educator, reformer and the first minister of education in Serbia. The development path of Dositej Obradovic was an effort and a long one, but the desire to learn and to transfer knowledge to the Serbian people was stronger. With his devotion and constant work, he brought Serbia closer to Europe and the world, opening the door for the penetration of new cultural and civilizational trends. After a great effort and resistance, Dositej Obradović founded the Great School in 1808, the forerunner of today’s University of Belgrade, and in 1810 and Faculty of the Church.. As the most prolific and most enlightened Serb, he became the first Minister of Education.

He had a vision that, without giving up the principle of making science and philosophy accessible to all people, from educated to those in the most forgotten villages. He stood for religious tolerance and equality, as well as the omnipotence of reason. He is rightfully considered to be the greatest Serbian reformer.Although, in principle, he and Vuk Stefanovic Karadzic had different views on how to bring literacy to the culture of the Serbs, their work separates them from the two greatest Serbian reformers. The inhabitants at the same time invested the same efforts in the enlightenment of the Serbian people and their graves are side by side in a lie in the Cathedral Church in Belgrade.

Today in Belgrade there is a museum building devoted to Dositej Obradovic and Vuk Stefanovic Karadzic.
