Democracy – 2

A review of the history of democracy shows a very slow movement from an all powerful King to a kind of uneven power sharing among a small group of aristocrats.

As time passed the Aristocrats gained more influence and power.  More persons were able to join the Aristocrats.

Less than two hundred years ago voting for who would represent the people in Parliament was extended to all men who owned sufficent property,  in the United Kingdom.

It took almost six hundred years for this ‘democracy’ to move from only the highest level of society to the upper middle class.

In America, voting began in 1788 but it was only to the State Legislature which would select the President.  It was not until 1824 that men of a certain economic status could vote directly for their candidate.
