Cemetary Hill in Gettysburg

At Gettysburg Battlefield in Pennsylvania at the National Military Park, we are visiting the very famous Cemetary Hill or ridge where the last (day 3) battle was faught in Gettysburg.  This is where the Union troops took up and defended the high ground on July 3, 1863 and turned the tide, defeating the Confederate troops and General Lee. The Confederates retreated back through the mountains and went back to the South. This same hill became the cemetary for the Union dead if the battle. Here we see part of the cemetary where more recent military crosses are. Near here, the temporary wooden stands had been built for the visit in November 1863 when President Abraham Lincoln came by train from Washington D.C. and gave his Gettysburg Address while many of the graves were still fresh.

  1. This was my favorite time in American history to study. Other areas that I liked was the colonial period and the antebellum era before the Civil War (War Between the States). This would be followed by the era of Westward expansion.
