Basilique du Sacré-Coeur de Montmartre by txatxy

Its construction was decided by the National Assembly in 1873, like a religious building in perpetuity in homage to the memory of the numerous French citizens who had lost the life during the Franco-Prussian War. According to his promoters it was also done to atone for the impiety of the Second French Empire.2 It was the architect Paul Abadie who won the competition for its construction.

The first stone was laid in 1875, and although completed in 1914, it was not consecrated until the end of World War I in 1919. The church was built with funds coming exclusively from a popular subscription.
