3 Easy Writing Prompts

If you are experiencing writer’s block, I know how hard it is to find something to write about. Sometimes we find ourselves uninspired and feeling a lack of creativity. Therefore, I have compiled a list of a few writer prompts and ideas to use.

1. Morning Pages

Morning Pages is a concept developed by author Julia Cameron. In her words, morning papers is:

“Morning Pages are three pages of longhand, stream of consciousness writing,done first thing in the morning.”

Done every single day, the morning pages will help you clear your thoughts and start fresh. There are no rules, you can fill up 3 pages (or more, or less) with anything that comes to mind. Since it’s just stream of consciousness writing, it can be done easily and efficiently.

2. Develop a Character

For this prompt, you must think of a minor character in one of your favorite novels, films or television series. Now, make up a story for this character. Re-imagine their background, write a new script for them and imagine if this characters was a leading character.

For example, you can develop a character like Ginny Weasley from the Harry Potter series, or a character like Mr. Wickham from Pride & Prejudice.

3. Commentary or Opinion Pieces

An easy way to start writing is to write a commentary or an opinion piece on a current topic. Whether it’s something you see online, hear on the TV or read in a newspaper, think about the topic and write a list of counter-arguments. If you really agree on your topic then try to write a convincing op-ed piece as if you were going to send it to a news publication.
