When my sister passed a few years ago, on Christmas day, it was sudden and tragic. I helped pack up her things in her home. I was given a few treasures that I will always hold close. She had a large curio cabinet filled with porcelain birds. Now they are in my home. Very special as they were special to her. Material things, yes, but a piece of her now resides with me to see, touch and feel every day.

Those little things are what help me along my grief journey. Having a little piece of something that was special to the loved one I have lost, on some days, is enough to help get me through the difficult times. Never underestimate those little things in life.

  1. Your words ring true. Some small things I carry around with me all the time, and they do bring a measure of comfort, a feeling of continued connection. These porcelain birds are quite beautiful, and a fitting memento for your dear sister.
