Kushi had realized that Paul needed to feel important.   He had an image of himself which did not match reality.

He was not unattractive but how he held his face, how he moved and spoke,  how he viewed the world made him unappealing.

To boost his ego she demeaned herself.

Paul  liked how she would take off his shoes and massage his feet.     He loved how she listened to him, always followed his advice, and did nothing he did not ‘order’.

She worked hard to keep pushing him up and pulling herself down.

Kushi was attuned to his moods and mentality, and fit herself into his life.   She knew that their  relationship was, in his eyes, perfect.
