I asked Miss Ellis a question I had held in the back of my throat for nearly two decades. I asked her if she was lonely.
She looked at me.
“No. I always have me.”
“Oh….”
The silence went on for a few minutes.
Then she looked at me, and began to speak.
“When I was twenty there was a couple in their sixties who had been married for about forty years. Then the husband died. When he died he took her soul with him.”
I didn’t expect to hear that.
