Verna had known Tom since he was fifteen. She knew he had been drafted into the Army and went to war.
She’d seen him in the hospital and knew he had suffered a breakdown as had so many of his fellow soldiers.
As she had known him before and liked him, she gave him special care.
Much of the counselling Tom had gotten assumed his breakdown was caused by being alone.
Hence, he should not be alone.
Verna considered him proper marriage material.
After his release from the hospital, she made it her mission to check on him twice a week.
