Meeting in Miami, Herbert and Judy talked about everything. He had never felt closer to anyone, not even Amanda. Judy was so honest, so real, he had never met anyone like her.
Her relationship with her son had never been in jeopardy. Although so poor she couldn’t afford the most minor diversion, she would walk with Steve to the pier and they’d look at the ships, coming and going, and make up stories.
Judy said,
“When Stevie was twelve he promised that when he had money he would take me on a ride on the boat. And he did.”
Herbert confessed to all the problems he had with Jeff.
Judy told him, “There’s nothing you can do, just be.”
That wasn’t a real answer, but there didn’t seem to be any.
