Every Wednesday Joan would attend the meeting of a particular club. Joan didn’t bother to go home to her empty house. No sense. Better to dawdle at work, go out for dinner, then arrive at the meeting.
As Syl did not live far from the meeting place, he’d often stop for dinner at a nice restaurant, and that is where Joan ran into him.
They began to go to dinner together, then arrive at the meeting, and be the last to leave.
Syl lived alone, and with Joan’s husband ‘never’ coming home, there was no impetus to leave a place where there were people for empty rooms.
