By instantly recognising you are tumbling into a memory of the abuse, and by immediately focusing on an object, you can divert the memories.
After a time, it becomes an automatic response. You think of the abuser, your eyes go to the tree. It will happen so fast that you won’t be distracted.
Although this sounds ‘silly’, it isn’t. You can not dwell on the past, on your abuser, on any aspect until you are safe and alone.
When you are safe and alone that is when you commence the review the past.
