365 day photo Challenge_day 3: Snow Geese at Hagerman

I’ve always heard about the migration of the snow geese through Hagerman National Wildlife Refuge but I’ve never gotten the full experience. Today visited hoping to photograph the spectacle, I was not disappointed.

It was a brisk afternoon and the sky was clear, you can see the flocks of white from a great distance. What struck me more than the overwhelming numbers was the wonderful sounds. It was the musical honking  mixed with the beating of great wings in the air and against the water.

To get a decent shot I really needed a 400-500 mm lens-put that on the Christmas list. The problem is they know you’re there and they’re used to people around them but they still keep their distance. I was impressed how subtle they would slowly walk just a little bit further away and you can tell they notice your every move.

I was so impressed when all at once a field of white becomes a sky full of wings that suddenly splashes down on the lake. They left me a small token of their esteem on my windshield, I considered it a small gift from nature.
