On Sunday 10th November was the Remembrance Service in the park in my town, Great Yarmouth. Although it was a cold day, it was dry. We did have a small shower at the beginning of the service, but it stayed dry for the rest of the service. It was nice to see so many people in the park to come and pay their respects. To the left of the picture you can see the band. I got there quite early so I could grab myself a good spot by the war memorial.
The service lasted about an hour, and as I say, it was lovely to see a good amount of people there. We must never forget what our ancestors did for us during the 2 world wars and, of course, in wars still being fought around the world.
I learned that you celebrate this in the United Kingdom the closest Sunday to November the 11th, and you wear a poppy in your jackets to pay homage to those dead in the World Wars the days prior.
Yes, I always wear a poppy. Thankyou for the lovely comment.
We also have a similar event in our country. It’s a very nice tradition.
Yes I agree Vidocka, it is a lovely tradition. =)
remember those who came before, remember those who gave their lives. We have a similar thing in the US. We remember the end of both great wars.
Yes, it’s good that the US have Veterans Day. It’s always good to remember the fallen.
It is good that we all remember the horror that was those two wars.
I wish there was a way that war could be over.
It is important to honor those who gave up their lives for our peace.
Yes Dawn, you are very right there.
Armed Forces in all countries should be honored. Today we had Veteran’s Day and back in Latvia, it was Lacplesa or Bear Slayer Day which I wrote about. It is a traditional day honoring Latvian soldiers who fought for their country and also has a military parade. While living there I had forgotten that is on the same day as Veteran’s Day
I think it’s interesting to see how different countries do things for Armistice Day. I always enjoy reading peoples different experiences of this around the world.
Today we celebrate Veterans Day in the US.
Yes, the UK had a 2 minute silence today at 11am. I think it’s important we still honour the armed forces past and present.
Yes I completely agree with you. We shall never forget.
In Serbia, too, a day of peace was marked today in World War I. In both wars we were allies.
What’s happening today?
We pay respects here too with many events happening at 11am when we fall silent. But the 2nd Sunday in November is always when we have the big services and parades.
seems beautiful place ……………
Thankyou Witty. It is a big park and plenty of places to sit down when the weather is nice. =)
