New Year’s carnival in Macedonia

A traditional carnival was held in the Macedonian village of Vevchani, located at the very border with Albania, on January 13 and 14. No one knows how long this carnival has been held – the locals mention the period from 800 to 1400 years, but the fact that this event is under the protection of UNESCO is enough to talk about its cultural significance.

There are no audience here, and participants, so you can enter the procession, walk, sing, play and drink with them. Masks are being prepared all year round, so in addition to standard carnival themes such as paradise and hell, chaos and destruction, masked participants display events that marked the previous year.

Last year, masks Donald Tramp, Barack Obama and LGBT activists were shown, while domestic politicians walked along the streets this year, in addition to witches and werewolves. On the second day of the carnival, masks are ritually burned at the stake, while the participants play with music.

This is the day when people allow themselves full freedom to express their views with masks. Over 1000 people participated in this year’s Carnival.

  1. I love hearing about things like this, especially when they are hundreds of years old. Living in such a relatively young country like America, we don’t have these sort of things.
