June 16th, I turned 65. I remember thinking that 2017 was sooo far into the future. Yet, here it is. I still have a part time job as a Personal Care Attendant. I’m collecting Social Security early before the government changes the date of eligibility beyond 67 to 70.
Social Security is only designed to be 40% of your retirement income. Until my official retirement age of 67, I’m only allowed to earn a certain amount before it affects taxes and SS check.
As long as I’m healthy, I have every intention of growing my backyard nursery business over the next two years to the point that it becomes the other 60% of what I need for a comfortable living.
In the meantime, working with my baby plants is satisfying. I feel the connection to the universe. It is spiritual.
The top photo shows my first plant sale in front of my home. The photo above shows where I start my baby plants and let them develop roots. The potted plants are the rooted babies growing up into beautiful plants.
Photos are taken by me.
I love gardening and am well past 65 now. I can’t do all I used to in the garden and I have to downsize. Photography is becoming more important to me now, and so is blogging.
I wouldn’t mind starting the same sort of business, but that would leave me fairly idle for 7 months out of the year and our house isn’t big enough to keep all the plants from freezing during those 7 months. People around here aren’t inclined to purchase plants when there are four feet of snow on the ground. LOL
I think gardening is a wonderful hobby and past time – hardly a ‘boring life’ as some have put it! My mum used to garden and I was always at her elbow when I was a kid. Nothing as satisfying as growing something, and seeing it thrive and bloom! All the best, Irene! 🙂
Thank you. I grow a good amount of my food and preserve it also.
You do a wonderful job with your plants. After retirement I started taking photos! That brings me a lot of joy and makes my life beautiful! 🙂
Life through a lense is a great legacy.
Awesome Irene – good luck. Growing things is so rewarding. Have you checked out to see whats trending in local nurseries – like herbs and stuff and undercut them! Hope you go from strength to strength.
I do grow herbs and several edibles. I’ve been creating containers of herbs and edibles for non-gardeners.
That is life
That is awesome, glad you found your peace and happiness, happy retirement!
I find it impossible to do ‘nothing’ plus any extra income is a godsend.
well done and good luck, Irene.
Oh…belated happy 65th birthday. I like your garden.
Thank you, Cassy. Looking forward to sharing more garden photos with you.
boring life
Maybe to you. I like the peace after all the drama and tentions of working conventional jobs. I lost my life partner a year and a half ago. My plans definitely changed without my guiding force. Dave was my life.
Very nice, happy afternoon
