Life After Retirement

June 16th, I turned 65. I remember thinking that 2017 was sooo far into the future. Yet, here it is. I still have a part time job as a Personal Care Attendant. I’m collecting Social Security early before the government changes the date of eligibility beyond 67 to 70.

Social Security is only designed to be 40% of your retirement income. Until my official retirement age of 67, I’m only allowed to earn a certain amount before it affects taxes and SS check.

As long as I’m healthy, I have every intention of growing my backyard nursery business over the next two years to the point that it becomes the other 60% of what I need for a comfortable living.

In the meantime, working with my baby plants is satisfying. I feel the connection to the universe. It is spiritual.

The top photo shows my first plant sale in front of my home. The photo above shows where I start my baby plants and let them develop roots. The potted plants are the rooted babies growing up into beautiful plants.

Photos are taken by me.

  1. I wouldn’t mind starting the same sort of business, but that would leave me fairly idle for 7 months out of the year and our house isn’t big enough to keep all the plants from freezing during those 7 months. People around here aren’t inclined to purchase plants when there are four feet of snow on the ground. LOL

  2. I think gardening is a wonderful hobby and past time – hardly a ‘boring life’ as some have put it! My mum used to garden and I was always at her elbow when I was a kid. Nothing as satisfying as growing something, and seeing it thrive and bloom! All the best, Irene! 🙂

  3. Awesome Irene – good luck. Growing things is so rewarding. Have you checked out to see whats trending in local nurseries – like herbs and stuff and undercut them! Hope you go from strength to strength.

    • Maybe to you. I like the peace after all the drama and tentions of working conventional jobs. I lost my life partner a year and a half ago. My plans definitely changed without my guiding force. Dave was my life.
