Kuker Festival in Pernik – Surva 2017.
Thousands of mummers discover the “Surva” festival in Pernik. Over the next two days, the city is the masquerade capital of Europe for the 26th time.
Traditionally, the festival began with a torchlight procession under the sounds of drums and dozens of bagpipes.
The official start was given by folk singer Valya Balkanska, who sang “Izlel je Delyo haidutin”.
Many years ago they chased the evil spirits. From all the houses they were chased in this way with the bells, and then the year was beautiful, successful and prosperous. It’s very tiring, but they’re used to wearing these bells, and it’s a pleasure for them.
