Hannuka

People spell this holiday many ways but in Hebrew it is spelled the same way.

Many people have talked about their holiday of Christmas and I would like to present the Jewish Holiday of Hannuka.

As the story goes the oil was only suppose to burn for one day but instead it burned for 8 days. That is why we celebrate the holiday 8 days. We light what is called a Hannukia. The main one is called the Shamash and that it the one used to light all the other ones. I will put a picture here of it and you can see it.

On Hannuka we not only light candles but we play with a dreidle and in Hebrew it is called a Sevivon. We have laser ones these days and you spin them around and they light up and sing in Hebrew. We also make potato pancakes called latkes in Hebrew. It is not only for children but for adults too. It is a joyous and colorful holiday.

I decided to search for a simple version for you about the holiday and here it is: Hanukkah is a Jewish holiday which celebrates the victory of the Maccabees over the larger Syrian army. It also celebrates a miracle that happened during this time, where just a day’s supply of oil allowed the menorah in the rededicated Temple in Jerusalem to remain lit for eight days.

I wanted to share that with you.

Thank you for reading about my holiday.

This year Hannuka will be on December 22nd at night it will start and end on December 30th at night.

  1. Lovely post and it is great to see the picture. Happy Hannuka to you and family.
Yes, I celebrate Christmas and because of the Jewish Faith we also have Christmas.
To me, Christmas is usually to be there for family and friends to let them know that they are loved and cared for.
Its not such a big thing in New Zealand as it is summer here while most at Virily are in winter.
It is hot and not a hot food time

    • Here in Israel there are lots of things in Hebrew. We get our sevivons(dreidls) from China and they sing in Hebrew. There are places or States or cities outside of Israel where people cannot find things in Hebrew.
