Christmas Tree Ornaments That Aren’t Very Christmas-y

When I was a kid Christmas ornaments tended to be ball-shaped and usually red, blue or silver. There were some variations but not much. That seems to have changed. Here are a few, shall I say, unusual Christmas ornaments.

Several of them come from a vendor at Chicago’s german Christmas Market. In Germany vendors will often set up booths in the town square to sell their crafts. For some time some of these craftsmen come to Chicago and set up their booths in the Loop. The program has expanded to not only include the Loop but the suburb of Naperville and, for the first time this year, just outside of Wrigley Field, home of the Chicago Cubs.

The others were photographed at a store called Cost Plus World Market. This store, actually a chain of stores, specializes in selling items from around the world.

Hedgehog Christmas Ornaments (2011-12-01 14-55-51a)

OK, when it comes to cute, it's hard to beat a pudgy little hedgehog. However, if there is a connection between them and Christmas, no one ever told me about it. This one also came from the German Christmas Market.

Cobra Christmas Ornaments (2011-12-01 14-55-28a)

I don't know about you but, when I think of Christmas, cobras are not the first thing that comes to mind. I found these little cuties at the German Christmas Market.

Hamburger Christmas Ornament (2017-11-28 16-11-37a)

Maybe, instead of milk and cookies, someone decided to leave a cheeseburger for Santa. This one was for sale at Cost Plus.

Shark Christmas Ornament (2011-12-01 15-00-17a)

We're going to need a bigger tree. Somebody warn the angel on the top. At least Big Ben is safe. This one was also at the German Christmas Market.

Beetle Christmas Ornament (2011-12-01 15-02-01a)

This little mutant has one more pair of legs than an insect normally gets. Another one from the German Christmas Market.

Orangutans Christmas Ornaments (2011-12-01 15-02-54a)

The Orangutan is the last one from the German Christmas Market. I love the grin on these guys but I still don't see the connection with Christmas.

Six-Pack of Beer Christmas Ornament (2017-11-28 16-11-52a)

And Santa can wash down the cheeseburger with a cold one. I can see it now. "Hey Rudolph, hold my beer and watch this." A Christmas offering from Cost Plus.

OK. This one is just plain sick. Really, Cost Plus, a mounted reindeer head! What were you thinking.
