After six weeks had passed and Evan was part of the Company, he changed his pattern.
Instead of arriving early and sneaking up the stairs, he arrived on time and took the elevator. Instead of eating in his office he went to the cafeteria for lunch.
He left at his quitting time, and walked through the lobby.
A few days passed then ‘suddenly’ Evan ran into Maura. He seemed shocked;
“What are you doing here?”
“I’m in charge of Development!” she exclaimed, “What are you doing here?”
“I’ve been working in the design section!” and he laughed as if it were all coincidental. After a few amenities he moved off as if he had somewhere to be a brilliant smile on his face.
He’d been to many offices over the past ten years. He knew how to be friendly, how to attract the female eye, how to get others to cover up his mistakes.
With his wife at the top table, Evan knew he was safe and had carte blanche.
