Lawyers prey upon RoundUp plaintiffs

Whenever there is any type of litigation involved, then you know that many attorneys will be ready to strike.  Over the past couple of years, more than one hundred thousand people have filed lawsuits against Bayer AG and Monsanto due to complications of non-Hodgkins lymphoma (NHL) after using the weedkiller RoundUp.

Bayer has agreed to settle for $10.9 billion (USD) in order to save face and to move on.  That means that every plaintiff would receive around $109,000 in the group settlement.  However, lawyers normally receive 1/3 of the settlement in attorney fees.  That means that a plaintiff with medical bills of thousands of dollars would actually remain in debt with the settlement.

One-third of $109,000 would be $36,333.33 leaving the plaintiff with an average amount of $72,667.67.  The average medical bill for aggressively fighting this type of cancer after using RoundUp would be $85,394.  That means that each plaintiff would actually lose around $12,726.33 for having the nerve to sue Bayer and Monsanto for poisoning them.  On the other hand, the attorney would make $36,333.33 off of each litigant.  After doing the math, many plaintiffs may possibly reject the settlement deal and file a new separate individual lawsuit instead of being bilked by the group settlement.
