Do you Really Need Sunglasses?

You may wear your sunglasses for fashion but did you know they help protect your eyes? No wonder you see everyone around you carrying sunnies with them wherever they go. For good eye health, one must always wear sunglasses if outdoors. Research shows that around ninety percent of people surveyed believed that eyes were key to their overall health. What they did not know what sunglasses were not only meant to cut down the sun’s glare. There are various other reasons why sunglasses are a necessity.

Here are some reasons you should purchase one yourself:

Eye health

Our eyes are delicate, sensitive organs and overexposure to the sun’s harmful rays can cause a lot of heavy damage to them. We know the sun emits ultraviolet (UV) rays that are detrimental for our eyes and our skin. To safeguard our eyes from these rays, you must choose sunglasses that block one hundred percent of UVA and UVB rays. If you have prescription glasses, it is recommended you purchase some prescription sunglasses online apart from your regular prescription eyeglasses. Sunglasses you invest in should be polarized. Why? Because polarized sunglasses block all the glare that comes from the sun and is reflected from various surfaces. This glare can cause temporary blindness and consequent difficulty seeing while performing activities, especially driving.

They provide complete, thorough protection to your eyes. Did you know prolonged exposure to sun rays can lead to glaucoma and cataracts? These are serious eye conditions that can also lead to blindness hence protection of your eyes is critical.

Other Elements

The sun is not the only source of worry, when spending time outdoors, other elements like sand, snow, wind or dust could also cause harm to your eyes. If some particles enter your eyes, they can cause abrasions or scratches harming your eyesight.

Did you know the snow you love so much is damaging your eyes? Eighty percent of the UV rays coming from the sun are reflected by snow. That means this strong glare can actually cause snow blindness by burning your cornea. If you enjoy and indulge in skiing, snowboarding, climbing mountains covered in snow or in general chilling in the snow, you want to be careful. The sunglasses you choose should fit you properly, covering your entire eyes and blocking any sunlight that tries to enter. Additionally, sand, dust and wind can cause alien particles to enter your eyes and cause some serious damage, hence it is strongly recommended to wear sunglasses when outside.

Recovery

The patients that have undergone surgeries like LASIK/PRK (for correction of vision), eyelid repair, cataract or any other surgery for your eyes, should take the utmost care and continue wearing glasses for a longer time than the doctor recommends. You need to give time to your eyes to heal and restore its complete capacity and with so many pollutants and harmful substances all around us, keeping them uncovered can reverse the procedure.

The above-mentioned reasons are enough for you to start wearing sunglasses today. Plus you look so dashing in them, so why keep sunnies away?

  1. Well this post prompts me to take the sunglasses even in the winter, consequently I have to take a break from Virily to go find them and put them in my pack. Now I will have 3 pairs of glasses with me at all times. The pair for the computer, the one for normal driving and the prescription sunglasses. Thanks for posting this important information.
