Having a comprehensive dental care regime and sticking to it can be tough, especially if you are in financial difficulty or have very little free time—let’s face it, we’ve all at least crashed after work or skipped the morning floss.
However, there are some obvious and not so obvious reasons to ensure you’re doing everything at home and having regular check-ups with professionals.

1) It Prevents Future Problems
Good oral care is partly about prevention. While skipping appointments and being inconsistent with your daily routine won’t necessarily cause you a problem now, over time plaque, cavities, gum disease and other conditions will mount up.
It’s important to understand this if you are skipping or putting things off because you think you’re saving time or for some other arbitrary reason. In the long run, you will waste more time fixing problems that you could have prevented by staying on top of your routine.
Brush at least twice a day with good technique, ideally with an electric toothbrush, floss at least once a day, use rinse aid, avoid too much sugar and maintain a healthy diet, and see your dentist regularly for advice and to catch problems early!
2) You Will Save Money in the Long-Run
This also applies to costs. While you think you might be saving money by not visiting the dentist and not buying the best toothbrushes, or perhaps skipping flossing altogether—in the long run, you could end up with a serious problem that needs costly surgery or other invasive treatments. Any money you did save could be eclipsed with one such dental bill.
Fortunately, whatever situation you find yourself in there are ways to secure dental finance online. You do not have to have the cash up front.
Sadly, this still isn’t encouraging the third of Americans who struggle to access basic dental care.
3) Prevent Pain and Maintain Functionality
Let’s not forget, one of the main negative consequences of poor dental care is pain and nobody likes to deal with pain on a daily basis. This could come from swollen gums, infections, damaged and decaying teeth, and myriad other problems. This pain could range from a minor annoyance to being so excruciating that you can’t function.
The function of your teeth themselves could also be reduced, making it difficult to bite, chew and enjoy food.
This is why it is so important to maintain and not delay good dental care.
4) Stop Bad Breath
One of the first and most off-putting signs of poor dental care is bad breath, which may be labelled as halitosis if it’s persistent.
Even if you brush and floss daily, over time you could still be missing things that only a dentist can reach with a professional clean. Leave it too long and you could get bad breath whether you generally look after your teeth or not.
5) Your Smile Will Simply Look Better
There’s a lot of positives that come with a pearly white smile, not least that you’ll feel more self-confident and won’t gross others out. This could have positives for everything from friendships to employment.

6) Detect Other Health Conditions
Although most health conditions detected by your dentist are directly linked to poor oral care, they can also pick up on conditions and diseases that aren’t always caused by this, such as acid reflux, inflammation from auto-immune diseases, oral cancer, osteoporosis, and many others.
Seeing your dentist regularly could save your life, even if you maintain a good oral care routine at home. At the least, it will help reduce the costly medical bills associated with treating such conditions and diseases in their later stages.
