Thomas Hart Benton Art at New Britain

We are walking around now inside the New Britain Museum of Art in Connecticut and viewing the incredible mural oil paintings of Thomas Hart Benton. I have seen his paintings before in Niagara Falls and other nice museums all over, but here they have 128 paintings and drawings by Benton. Thomas Hart Benton was the son of a politician by the same name. He lived from 1889-1975 and studied art in Paris and many other places. He was influenced by El Greco and Michelangelo and you can see these influences in his art. He painted people all across America in his American Life series and depicted everyday lives of everyday people working and playing. He had a student, depicted below in the jeans coveralls, named Jackson Pollack. His paintings were at the time controversial and often even different shaped to fit in different mural locations like between windows in architectural settings.
