The Writer Collage

This is my husband Kevin. He is an author, scriptwriter, drama director, actor, artist, videographer and genius. You may think I’m biased, and I may be. However I think he doesn’t get the credit he deserves most of the time. So I am his biggest cheerleader and advocate. He wanted a drawing of himself for his blog site so I began by taking photos and decided on one pose. Then I began the process of collaging. Here is my process.

I took lots of photos and decided on this large one here.

#3 Step 1: The Sketch

I draw out the sketch in pencil on 80# paper.

#4 Step 2: The background

I begin laying in background pieces first. I wanted the light to go from very white to slightly grey behind him.

#5 Step 3: Skin Tones

I played with the jacket as well as the face here. I always put the face in before I place the glasses. That is wisest.

#6 Step 4: The Table

The table top is technically part of the background so I needed to have it in before I finish the hands.

#7 Step 5: The Hands

I finished the table and the hands as well as the paper he is writing on. I love that the paper has words on it as well as the rest of the image.

#8 Step 6: Finish

This is where I add all the little things that need adjusting, like the glasses on his face and little shadows.

  Thank you so much. You are very complementary but they are my feelings as well. Together we have created theatrical productions; I did scenes and backdrops, costumes and special effects; he did the writing, directing and sometimes acting. It has been a powerful collaboration over the years. Thanks for noticing.
