The Swells: A Pastel from Kayaking in Florida

UP,

High and rising over the next

Silky emerald swell

And down in the valley

Watching

Fins beneath,

Fish all around

Rising up

High and rolling, over

Soft, transparent walls

Danger is just a thin plastic

Kayak

A minimal separation

The pier

Patrons safe on wood pilings

Watching from a far

DOWN

Into the valleys

Rich and full of life

Afraid

But no one knows

The sound of petulant waves

Cascading

Rising and falling

With the blood

Up and down the spine

A silence

Separation from the shore

And anything solid

Or safe

UP

High and rising over the next

Impossible wave

Trust in God

Trust n plastic

Beneath us

The depths of water

Wait

To take

Foolish enthusiast

Feeling a bit too safe
