Predatory Metal Cats – 111416 photomontage © 2017 – Howard Faxon
Predatory metal cats was an idea that struck me a couple of years ago. Around the time of “Earth Overshoot Day” I made a picture to comment loosely on the extractive industries that are wreaking havoc on the living things of our planet. The machines made by Caterpillar all have the logo that says ‘CAT’ on them. This is how I decided to dub them ‘predatory metal cats”.
I posted the first picture here a couple of years ago on ‘Earth Overshoot Day’. I keep referring to these images but have never shown them. Now is a good time to change that. This is one of my most ‘flushed out’ series of images and they are the source of several offshoots. So, I want to publish the series here on Virily over the next weeks and explain the process of making them a little.
For this introductory post I chose one of the later works which is a favorite of mine. It has a soft and warm feel with the exception of the hard and dirty CAT. And, while I am stuck with using only my pictures I that have taken to draw from, I feel this image was able to convey an idea by “speaking with a closed mouth” so to speak. I didn’t think a subtitle was needed to help it. I present “Predatory Metal Cats – 111416”.
The mining and excavations that happens around is indeed destroying our tiny blue planet. I wish we had more sense than that. Love the name- predatory metal cats.
I believe it is a few people without sense. Most everyone on earth does not want this. I wasn’t going to post the rest of them because it’s depressing maybe. I will though as I said I would.
The name was the best part for me. So I made many images under it. Cheers!
Very interesting post and image……………..
This year ‘Earth Overshoot Day’ is July 29. Last year Aug. 18.
I have a bunch of these exploring different aspects or ways to picture the idea, but I wonder if it will get old posting all of them.
They were doing roadwork by my old house for years so I took pictures of all the machines.
That is very interesting…….
Such a sad collage of images. Man is ruining the planet and killing off the animals.
We can change though.
But yeah, it’s not surprising that I never sell any things like this ever. I have happier stuff …
I’ve had reservations about showing a bunch of these in a row. They’re all kind of like this. (I’ll become that “downer guy” whinging on about cats and stuff).
Cheers Linda
I fully agree with the opinion of Mr.Doc Anderson.
Man is the biggest threat to the planet Earth.
“With great power comes great responsibility”. We don’t need to be such a big threat. Maybe we can change.
Thanks for stopping in, man. Cheers !
What a great presentation of the argument who is winning humans or nature? Humans, the least effective predator 10,000 years ago, now the greatest predator the world has ever seen. We have caused the extinction of more animals than any other predator ever. Including the virtual destruction of the predators that 10,000 years ago would have eaten humans!
We may just win ourselves to death.
My idea though is that fossil fuels and deforestation and such isn’t winning for us anymore. As an invincible apex predator we could afford to show some restraint maybe. We can do better for our children and we should try at least. … I’ve had reservations about showing a bunch of these in a row. They’re all kind of like this. (I’ll become that “downer guy” whinging on about cats and stuff).
or we are such an apex predator now that we must prey on ourselves and the very world we live upon. win ourselves to death, indeed…
Well, Spock said, “To hunt a species into extinction is illogical”.
species wide suicide even less so. what are we, lemurs?
The two of you together is a little scary.
I shall not comment on the rest of this thread.
but you’d fit right in… we’d be like the three tenors of virily
ROFL.
You funny.
🙂 I will go practice my scales now.
