Painted Furniture at Luray Caverns

The Historical Village was an unexpected surprise at the Luray Caverns attraction in Virginia near the Shenandoah National Park. Here were a few pieces of painted folk art furniture made in the late 1700’s. The Dower Chest was painted in 1798 by the famous folk artist Johannes Spitler in Page County, Virginia. He made playful abstract geometric designs using traditional German patterns using a compass and straightedge and making his own pigmented paints. The second bright green piece is a large pie chest with incredible geometric patterned pierced tin and great color paint.
